How to Make a Background Transparent on Any Device

A transparent background needs the right tool and the right file format. How to cut out logos and photos on every device, and why your PNG still shows a white box.

To make a background transparent, you need two things: a tool that deletes the background pixels and a file format that can store empty pixels, such as PNG or WebP. JPG cannot hold transparency, so a cutout saved as JPG comes back with a white or black box behind it. This guide shows how to make background areas transparent on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, and how to check that the result really is transparent.

What a transparent background really is

Every pixel in an image has color values for red, green and blue. Formats that support transparency add a fourth value, the alpha channel, which says how visible each pixel is. An alpha of zero means fully see through, and values in between give soft edges that blend into whatever sits behind the image.

Editors show transparent areas as a gray and white checkerboard. That pattern is only a preview. It is not part of the file, and it disappears when you place the image on a web page, a slide or a T shirt design.

The fake transparent PNG

Image searches are full of files that show a checkerboard in the thumbnail but have the pattern painted into the pixels. When you place one on a colored banner, the checkerboard comes along. If a downloaded logo looks transparent before you even open it, test it on a dark background first.

Which file formats support transparency

The format you save in decides whether the empty area survives. This table covers the formats you are most likely to meet.

FormatTransparencyGood for
PNGYes, full alpha with soft edgesLogos, cutouts, screenshots, design work
WebPYes, full alphaWebsites that need smaller files
AVIFYes, full alphaModern websites, newer browsers
GIFOn or off only, no soft edgesSimple icons and old systems
SVGYes, it is a vector formatLogos that must stay sharp at any size
JPGNoPhotos on a solid background

Renaming photo.jpg to photo.png changes nothing inside the file. Converting a JPG to PNG does not create transparency either: the old background becomes solid PNG pixels. You still need to remove the background first. Our PNG vs JPG guide explains the rest of the differences between the two formats.

How to make background transparent with FileKiwi

The FileKiwi tool uses an AI model to find the main subject and erase everything around it. It works in any modern browser, on a computer or a phone.

  1. Open Remove Background.
  2. Add one image or several. JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC photos all work.
  3. Keep the Background option on Transparent.
  4. Start the removal. The first run downloads the AI model, about 44 MB, and the browser caches it for later visits.
  5. Download the result. Transparent results are always saved as PNG.

The model works best on clear subjects such as people, products, pets and cars. Fine hair and glass can need a second try with a different photo, and there is no manual brush yet. The same tool can also put the subject on white, black, any color or a blurred version of the original background; those results are saved as JPG.

A copy of every image you add is uploaded over HTTPS and kept in a private folder on the FileKiwi server for 30 days, then deleted. The finished cutouts are not stored.

Built in ways to remove a background

Recent versions of macOS, iOS and Windows 11 can cut out a subject without extra apps. The steps below follow the official Apple and Microsoft instructions.

Mac: Preview and Finder

  1. Open the image in Preview.
  2. Click the Remove Background button in the toolbar.
  3. If Preview asks to convert the file to PNG, click Convert, or click Cancel and choose File > Duplicate first to keep the original.

In Finder, Control click an image, choose Quick Actions, and pick Remove Background (on some setups it sits under More). Apple describes both methods on its Preview support page.

For a logo on a flat color, the Instant Alpha tool in the Preview Markup toolbar is often more precise. Choose it from the Selection Tools menu, drag across the background until it is highlighted, then press Delete.

iPhone and iPad

Since iOS 16, Photos can lift a subject away from its background. Open the photo, touch and hold the subject until a glowing outline appears, then let go and choose Copy, Share or Add Sticker. The lifted subject has no background, so you can paste it into Notes or send it in Messages or Mail. Saving it as a file for design work is easier with a browser tool that downloads a PNG.

Windows 11: Photos and Paint

  1. Open the image in Photos and select Edit image, or press Ctrl + E.
  2. Open the Background panel. Photos selects the background automatically.
  3. Choose Remove, then Apply, and save a copy.

Paint has a Remove background button in its toolbar, and it shows empty areas as a checkerboard. Use File > Save as and pick the PNG format, because JPG would fill the empty area again.

Android

Android has no standard built in background remover. Some phone makers add one to their gallery app, but the name and location differ by brand and model. Chrome and the browser method above work the same on every Android phone.

Solid white background vs photo background

Two very different jobs hide behind the same question, and they need different tools.

A logo or icon on a solid color

Many logos arrive as a JPG on white. Here the background is one flat color, so a color based tool such as Instant Alpha removes it cleanly. Watch for white areas inside the design, for example the hole in the letter O or a white star in the middle of the logo. A color tool may delete those too, and a design meant to have white parts then shows the color behind it.

If you can, ask for the original vector file (SVG, AI, EPS or PDF). A vector logo has no background to remove and stays sharp at every size.

A photo with a real background

A person in front of a bookshelf has hundreds of colors behind them, so color based tools fail. This is where AI models are needed, because they recognize the subject instead of a color. Even light and contrast between subject and background give the cleanest edges.

Common problems and how to fix them

  • The background turns white or black after saving. The file was saved or converted as JPG somewhere along the way. Save as PNG or WebP and do not convert back.
  • A white halo around the edges. Edge pixels still carry some of the old white background. It shows on dark backgrounds. Remove the background from a sharper original, or place the cutout on a lighter design.
  • The PNG is too big for a website. Transparent PNG photos can be several megabytes. Shrink them with Compress PNG or convert them with PNG to WebP, which keeps the transparency.
  • The upload shows a solid background. Some sites and apps convert every upload to JPG. Check the image after posting, and use a solid color background if the platform does not keep transparency.

If you need a solid white result instead of an empty one, for example for a shop listing, read how to remove a photo background and get a white one.

How to check that the result is really transparent

  1. Open the file in an editor that shows a checkerboard, such as Paint on Windows or Preview on a Mac.
  2. Place it on a dark slide or page and on a light one. Halos and leftover background show up on the dark one.
  3. Look at the file extension. If it ends in .jpg or .jpeg, the transparency is gone.
  4. Zoom in on hair, fur and fine details, where cutouts usually fail first.

Which method to pick

For a flat logo on one color, Instant Alpha in Preview or a vector file from the designer gives the cleanest result. For people, products and pets, an AI tool does the work: Preview or Finder on a Mac, Photos or Paint on Windows 11, Photos on an iPhone, or the browser on any device.

Whatever you use, save the result as PNG or WebP and test it on a dark background before it goes into a design.

FAQ

How do I make a background transparent for free?

Open the FileKiwi Remove Background tool, add your image and keep the Background option on Transparent. The AI removes the background in your browser and the result downloads as a PNG. On a Mac you can also use Preview, and on Windows 11 the Photos or Paint app.

Can a JPG have a transparent background?

No. The JPG format has no alpha channel, so every pixel must have a solid color. When a transparent image is saved as JPG, the empty area is filled, usually with white or black. Use PNG or WebP when you need transparency.

Why does my transparent PNG show a checkerboard when I use it?

The checkerboard was painted into the pixels, so the file only looks transparent. This is common with images found through web searches. Remove the background again from the original image, or ask the owner of the logo for a real transparent PNG or a vector file.

Does converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?

No. Converting only changes the format. The old background becomes solid PNG pixels and stays visible. You have to remove the background first, with an AI tool or a color tool such as Instant Alpha, and then save the result as PNG.

What is the best format for a transparent logo?

A vector SVG is best when you have one, because it stays sharp at every size. For a pixel image, PNG is the safe choice that every app opens. WebP also keeps transparency and makes smaller files for websites, but some older programs cannot open it.
