How to Remove a Photo Background and Get a White One

How to Remove a Photo Background and Get a White One

A white background makes a photo look clean, professional and ready for almost any use. Online shops, CVs, profile pictures and catalogs all benefit from it. This guide shows how to remove the background from a photo and replace it with pure white, using a free tool in your browser or the features already built into your phone or computer.

Why use a white background?

  • Product photos. Marketplaces such as Amazon ask for a pure white background on the main product image, and many smaller shops follow the same style.
  • Profile and CV photos. A plain background keeps attention on your face instead of the room behind you.
  • Documents and catalogs. White blends into the page, so items look neatly placed.
  • Consistency. When every item in a collection shares the same background, the whole page looks organized.

Official ID photos are a special case. Passport and visa rules often ask for a plain light or white background, but they also set rules for size, lighting, expression and editing. Always check the current requirements of the office that issues the document before you edit a photo for it.

How AI background removal works

Removing a background used to mean tracing the subject by hand with a pen tool, which took a lot of time. Today an AI model looks at the photo, decides which pixels belong to the main subject and builds a mask around it. Everything outside the mask is removed.

FileKiwi uses a U2Net based model for this job. The model runs inside your browser, so the photo is never uploaded. The first time you use the tool, the browser downloads the model, about 44 MB, and keeps it in its cache, so later visits start faster.

How to get a white background with FileKiwi

  1. Open the White Background tool.
  2. Choose your photo or drop it onto the page.
  3. Wait a few seconds while the AI separates the subject from the background.
  4. Pick white as the new background color.
  5. Download the finished image.

The same tool can give other results too. You can keep a transparent PNG with Remove Background, choose any solid color such as black or a brand color, or create a soft portrait look with Blur Background. There is no signup and no watermark on any of them.

Tips for a clean cutout

The AI works best on clear subjects: people, products, pets and cars. A few habits before you press the shutter make a big difference to the edges.

Light the subject evenly

Soft daylight from a window is ideal. Hard shadows can look like part of the object, and the model may keep them in the cutout.

Create contrast

A dark product against a light wall, or a light product on a dark surface, gives the model clear edges to follow. A white mug on a white table is the hardest case of all.

Keep the subject sharp

Blurry edges turn into soft, fuzzy outlines after removal. Tap to focus on your phone screen and hold the camera steady, or rest it on something.

Leave space around the subject

Do not crop tightly when you shoot. Free space around the subject lets you crop later to the exact shape a shop or profile needs.

Expect a second try for hair and glass

Fine hair, fur and see through objects such as glasses or bottles are hard for any automatic tool. If an edge looks wrong, try another shot taken against a plainer background. FileKiwi has no manual brush yet, so a better source photo is the way to fix it.

Other ways to remove a background

Your phone or computer may already include a background removal feature. These options are handy, but most of them give you a transparent cutout rather than a white background.

iPhone and iPad

Since iOS 16 you can touch and hold the subject of a photo in the Photos app to lift it from the background, then copy or share it. The result has no background at all, so you still need another app to place it on white. A browser tool that does both in one step is often quicker.

Mac

Recent versions of macOS can remove backgrounds in Preview and through Finder Quick Actions. As on the iPhone, the result is transparent, so filling it with white takes an extra step.

Windows

The Paint app in Windows 11 gained a background removal button in 2023. It also leaves an empty area that you need to fill yourself before saving.

Android

Some phone makers include background removal in their gallery apps, but the feature varies by brand and model. A browser tool works the same way on every Android phone.

A quick checklist for product photos

If you sell online, a consistent routine makes every new listing faster. Many sellers follow a simple set of steps.

  1. Shoot every product in the same spot, with the same light and the same distance.
  2. Fill most of the frame with the product, but leave a little space on each side.
  3. Take several angles: front, back, side and a close view of details such as labels or texture.
  4. Run the photos through the White Background tool one by one.
  5. Crop all of them to the same shape so your shop grid lines up neatly.

Read the image rules of each marketplace you sell on, since size and background requirements can differ between platforms and categories.

After the background: size and format

Once your photo has a white background, it may need a final touch before you upload it.

  • Square images. Shops and social profiles often prefer a 1:1 shape. Use Crop Image with the 1:1 preset.
  • Exact pixel size. Set the width and height you need with Resize Image.
  • Small file size. Forms with a 20 KB or 50 KB limit need compression. Our guide on reducing image size to 20 KB or 50 KB explains how to get there.

PNG or JPG?

For a photo on a solid white background, JPG is usually the better final format. It makes smaller files and every website accepts it. If your download is a PNG and you need a lighter file, turn it into a JPG with PNG to JPG.

Keep the PNG version when you need transparency for design work, such as placing a product on a colored banner later. Our comparison of WebP vs PNG vs JPG covers the differences in more detail.

Is your photo private?

Yes. Background removal on FileKiwi happens on your own device, inside the browser. The photo is not sent to a server, so it suits personal portraits, family pictures and product shots you have not published yet.

Because the work happens on your device, speed depends on your phone or computer. A newer device finishes in a few seconds, while an older phone may take a little longer on large photos.

FAQ

How do I make a photo background white for free?

Open the FileKiwi White Background tool, add your photo and let the AI remove the original background. Choose white as the new color and download the result. It is free, adds no watermark and runs in your browser, so the photo stays on your device the whole time.

Why does the edge around hair look rough?

Fine hair, fur and see through objects are the hardest parts for any automatic tool. Results improve with a sharp photo, even light and a plain, contrasting original background. Since there is no manual brush yet, choosing or taking a better photo is the best way to get a cleaner edge.

Can I use a white background photo for a passport?

A tool can make the background white, but passport and visa photos follow strict rules about size, lighting, expression and sometimes editing. Some offices do not accept edited photos at all. Check the official requirements of the issuing authority before you submit a photo you edited yourself.

Is my photo uploaded when I remove the background?

No. FileKiwi runs the AI model inside your browser. The model is downloaded once, about 44 MB, and cached for later visits, while your photo never leaves your device. You can safely process personal portraits or private product shots.
