What is a WebP file?
WebP is an image format created by Google. It can hold photos, graphics with transparent areas and short animations, usually in smaller files than JPG or PNG. Online shops, news sites and blogs use it a lot.
The trouble starts after you download. Some desktop software, print services and many forms still do not handle WebP. A JPG copy avoids that.
You meet it when you save a recipe photo from a blog, grab a product picture to send a friend, or collect reference images for a school project. The image looks fine in the browser, then will not open anywhere else.
How WebP to JPG conversion handles special images
- Transparent WebP: JPG has no transparency, so clear areas are filled with white. To keep the see through background, use WebP to PNG instead.
- Animated WebP: only the first frame is converted, giving you a still picture.
- Large images: files up to 50 MB each are supported.
To make the picture smaller in pixels, for example a 3000 pixel banner you want as a 1200 pixel email image, use Resize Image after converting.
When to keep WebP and when to use JPG
If you run a website, WebP is a good choice for your pages because it loads quickly. Keep it there.
Pick JPG when the image goes somewhere else: an email attachment, a Word document, a printing kiosk, a marketplace listing or a social media scheduler that rejects WebP. For other formats, see the full image converter.
