Why convert an image to PNG?
PNG is lossless, which means it never throws away detail to save space. That makes it the best working format for images you plan to edit, annotate or reuse many times. A JPG saved repeatedly gets softer each time, while a PNG stays identical.
PNG also supports full transparency with smooth edges. That matters for logos, stickers, product cutouts and overlays placed on colored backgrounds or video.
Some platforms ask for PNG by name, for example app icon uploads, print on demand designs and many slide or document templates. Converting once gives you a file that meets those rules.
When PNG is the right choice, and when it is not
PNG works best with screenshots, text, charts, interface designs, icons and pixel art. Edges stay sharp and flat colors stay clean.

For camera photos you only want to share or upload, PNG adds size with no visible gain. In that case, convert to JPG instead.
A good habit is to keep a PNG while you work on an image, then export a JPG or WebP copy only for the final upload.
Notes for specific formats
- HEIC photos from iPhone are decoded in your browser. See HEIC to PNG for iPhone tips.
- SVG files are rendered at twice their size by default, with the longest side capped at 4096 px.
- Animated GIF and WebP files give you the first frame as a still PNG.
- TIFF files are read on our server with ImageMagick. Only the first page of a multipage TIFF is converted.
- JPG sources convert cleanly, but the PNG will be larger and keeps any compression marks the JPG already had.
- Metadata such as GPS location is not copied into the PNG.
