What fits inside 20 KB
Twenty kilobytes is a tight budget, and the bytes go to detail. A plain white wall costs almost nothing. Hair, patterned shirts, noisy shadows from a dark room and busy backgrounds cost a lot. The more of that the picture has, the lower the quality FileKiwi must choose.
A few examples of how this plays out:
- Signature on white paper: mostly empty, so it fits easily at a good quality once the paper around the ink is cropped away.
- Head and shoulders photo on a plain background: fits with a clear face, as long as the picture is not thousands of pixels wide.
- Full scene photo: hard. Expect a soft image or a smaller pixel size.
Forms that ask for 20 KB are usually exam, recruitment, scholarship, admission and some government or visa portals. Each sets its own rules for format, dimensions and background, so read the instructions on the form itself.
Compress image to 20KB and keep it readable
Most of the quality you get at 20 KB is decided before you press the button.
- Crop tightly. Cut the photo to head and shoulders, and the signature close to the ink, with Crop Image.

- Sign with a dark pen. Black or dark blue ink on white paper survives low quality far better than pencil.
