How to Convert PDF to JPG on Any Device (and Pick the Right DPI)

Turn PDF pages into JPG images on a computer or phone. Compare built in options with a browser converter and learn which DPI gives sharp pages without huge files.

Here is how to convert PDF to JPG: open the PDF in a tool that draws each page as a picture, choose a resolution, and save every page as a JPG file. A browser converter does all pages at once on any device, while a Mac, an iPhone or a quick screenshot can handle a single page without extra software.

JPG and JPEG are the same format with two spellings, so a "PDF to JPEG" request means exactly the same thing. The only real decision is the resolution, and that is where most blurry results come from.

Choose the right DPI before you convert

A PDF page has no fixed pixel size. When it turns into a JPG, the converter has to decide how many pixels to draw for every inch of paper. That number is the DPI (dots per inch), and it sets both the sharpness and the file size of your images.

DPIA4 page in pixelsUS Letter page in pixelsGood for
72595 x 842612 x 792Thumbnails, quick previews, chat messages
1501240 x 17541275 x 1650Reading on screen, social posts, slides, email
3002480 x 35082550 x 3300Printing, small text, zooming into details

For most people the best DPI is 150. Text stays readable on a phone or laptop and the files stay small enough to send. Pick 300 when the image will be printed or when the page has fine print, maps or drawings that someone will zoom into.

Doubling the DPI makes each image roughly four times larger in pixels, because both width and height double. A 30 page document at 300 DPI can easily weigh more than the original PDF.

How to convert PDF to JPG online with FileKiwi

This method works the same way in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, on a computer or a phone, and it converts every page in one go.

  1. Open the PDF to JPG converter.
  2. Drop your PDF on the page, or tap to choose it from your computer, phone or a cloud folder.
  3. Choose 72, 150 or 300 DPI. The default is 150.
  4. Set the quality slider. It runs from 50 to 100% and starts at 90. Lower values give smaller files.
  5. Convert, then download the pages you need one at a time, or press Download all to get every page in a ZIP file.

The pages are drawn inside your browser with PDF.js, an open source PDF renderer, so even a long document does not wait in a server queue. A copy of the PDF you add is uploaded over HTTPS and kept in a private folder for 30 days, then deleted automatically. The JPG images themselves are not stored.

Password protected PDFs cannot be converted. Remove the password first, as explained in how to remove a password from a PDF, then convert the unlocked copy.

How to save a PDF as an image on a Mac

Preview, the PDF and image viewer that comes with every Mac, can export a PDF page as a JPEG. The steps below match Preview on macOS Tahoe 26 and later versions.

  1. Open the PDF in Preview.
  2. Choose View, then Thumbnails, and click the page you want to save.
  3. Choose File, then Export.
  4. Open the Format menu and choose JPEG.
  5. Move the Quality slider and type a Resolution in pixels per inch, for example 150 or 300.
  6. Pick a name and a folder, then click Save.

Preview saves one page per export. That is fine for a ticket or a single certificate, but slow for a 20 page brochure. For many pages, the browser tool is faster because it converts the whole file and packs the results into one ZIP.

How to convert PDF to JPG on Windows 11

Windows 11 has no built in option that exports PDF pages as JPG files. Microsoft Edge opens PDFs for reading and printing, but its menus do not offer a save as image command.

Use the Snipping Tool for one page

  1. Open the PDF in Edge and zoom so the whole page fills the window.
  2. Press the Windows logo key + Shift + S.
  3. Choose Rectangle or Window mode and drag around the page.
  4. The capture is saved to your Screenshots folder automatically. Use Save as in the Snipping Tool window to put a copy somewhere else.

Microsoft describes all the modes in its Snipping Tool guide. Keep in mind that a screenshot can only be as sharp as your screen. On a laptop display, a full A4 page usually comes out lower in resolution than a 150 DPI conversion, so small print may look soft.

Use the browser tool for whole documents

For several pages, an exact DPI or a file that must look sharp, open the converter in Edge or Chrome and follow the FileKiwi steps above. Nothing needs to be installed, which helps on office PCs where you cannot add software.

PDF to image on iPhone and Android

iPhone: export with the Preview app

Since iOS 26, the iPhone has its own Preview app for PDFs and images. Apple's guide to exporting in Preview on iPhone lists JPEG as an export format and a Resolution setting for PDFs.

  1. Open the Preview app and open your PDF.
  2. Tap the button next to the file name, then tap Export.
  3. Choose JPEG as the format.
  4. Drag the Size slider toward higher quality, and enter a Resolution in pixels per inch.
  5. Choose a location, rename the file if you like, and tap Save.

iPhone: take a screenshot of the page

For a quick share, open the PDF, zoom so the page fills the screen, and press the side button and the volume up button together. On an iPhone with a Home button, press the Home button and the side button.

The image goes to your photo library, under Screenshots in the Photos app. The resolution is limited to your screen, so use it for messages, not for printing.

Android

Android has no standard export from PDF to JPG, and the PDF viewer differs between phone brands. A screenshot works on every phone (on most models, press Power and Volume down together). For full pages at a chosen DPI, open the FileKiwi converter in Chrome, pick the PDF from Files or Downloads, and save the images to your phone.

Fix blurry, heavy or missing pages

  • Blurry text. Convert again at 300 DPI with quality at 90% or higher. If the PDF is a poor scan, a higher DPI cannot add detail the scanner never captured.
  • Files too large for an upload form. Use 150 DPI and a quality around 80%. If one image is still too big, shrink it afterwards with a target size tool.
  • Only a few pages needed. Every page gets converted, but you can download only the ones you want. For long files, pull out the pages first with Extract PDF Pages so the conversion finishes sooner.
  • Sharp lines and screenshots. JPG compression can leave faint smudges around thin lines and small text. For diagrams, forms and text heavy pages, PDF to PNG keeps edges clean at the cost of bigger files. The PNG vs JPG guide explains the difference.
  • White background instead of transparency. JPG has no transparency, so the page background is always solid. That is normal for documents.
  • Text you can no longer copy. A JPG is a picture of the page. Links stop working, text cannot be selected or searched, and a screen reader cannot read it aloud. Keep the original PDF for anyone who needs the actual text.
  • Pages in the wrong order. Converters number the files by page, so sort the folder by name before you upload or post the images.

When to keep the PDF instead

Convert to JPG when a page has to behave like a photo: an Instagram post, a slide, a profile picture, a form that accepts only images. For contracts, invoices and anything with several pages that someone must read, sign or print, sending the PDF is usually better. It stays one file, the text stays sharp at any zoom, and nothing is lost to compression.

Which method to pick

Use a screenshot when you need one page in a chat and quality does not matter. Use Preview on a Mac or an iPhone when you want a single page at a set resolution without opening a browser.

For whole documents, a specific DPI or a ZIP of every page, the online converter is the quickest route on any device. Start at 150 DPI, check one image at full size, and move to 300 DPI only when the result needs to be printed or zoomed.

FAQ

How do I convert a PDF to JPG for free?

Open the FileKiwi PDF to JPG converter, add your PDF, choose 72, 150 or 300 DPI and convert. Each page becomes its own JPG, which you can save one by one or all together as a ZIP. It works in any modern browser on computers and phones, with no signup and no watermark.

What is the best DPI to convert a PDF to JPG?

150 DPI is the best default for reading on screen, sharing in chats and attaching to emails. Choose 300 DPI for printing or for pages with very small text, maps or drawings. 72 DPI is only for thumbnails, because text often becomes hard to read at that size.

Is PDF to JPEG the same as PDF to JPG?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are two names for the same image format. Older versions of Windows only allowed three letter file extensions, so .jpg became common, while .jpeg is the full name. Any app that opens one opens the other, and the image quality is identical.

How do I save a PDF as an image on my iPhone?

On iOS 26 and later, open the PDF in the Preview app, tap the button next to the file name, tap Export and choose JPEG. Set the resolution and save. You can also take a screenshot of the page, or convert the whole PDF in Safari with a browser tool and save the images.

Can I convert only one page of a PDF to JPG?

Yes. In Preview on a Mac, select that page in the thumbnail sidebar before you export. In a browser converter, every page is converted but you can download only the image you need. For long files, extract the page into its own PDF first so the conversion is quicker.
